VIT GPA & CGPA Calculation Explained

At VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology), GPA and CGPA are calculated by taking the weighted average of grade points and credit hours using the official academic regulations. GPA reflects performance in a semester, while CGPA reflects the overall performance across all semesters.

To calculate: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, sum them up, and divide by total credits; for CGPA, repeat this logic across all semesters.

What Is a VIT GPA Calculator?

A VIT GPA Calculator is a specialized online tool designed to compute your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) based on the official grading system of Vellore Institute of Technology. Whether you are studying at the Vellore, Chennai, AP (Amaravati), or Bhopal campus, the grading logic remains consistent under the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS).

This tool simplifies complex manual math into a few clicks, allowing you to:

  • Track your academic progress semester by semester.
  • Plan your credit registration for upcoming semesters.
  • Estimate the GPA needed to reach a target CGPA (crucial for placements).
  • Convert your grade points into an equivalent percentage for job applications.

VIT Grading System (10-Point Scale) — Official Mapping

At VIT, letter grades are assigned based on your relative performance (class average) or absolute marks, depending on the course size. These letter grades are then converted to grade points using a 10-point scale. This is the official mapping used by our gpa calculator vit tool:

Letter Grade Grade Point Description
S10Outstanding
A9Excellent
B8Very Good
C7Good
D6Average
E5Poor (Pass)
F0Fail
N0Debarred/Absent

Note: If you receive an 'F' or 'N' grade, you earn 0 grade points, but the credits still count towards the calculation, significantly lowering your GPA. You must clear these courses to improve your score.

How the VIT GPA Calculator Works

Semester GPA (SGPA) Formula

The SGPA is the ratio of the sum of the product of the number of credits with the grade points scored in all courses taken by a student and the sum of the number of credits of all the courses undergoing by a student.

SGPA = ∑ (Course Credits × Grade Points) ÷ ∑ Total Course Credits

Example: GPA Calculation at VIT

Let’s assume a student takes 4 courses in a semester:

  • Math (4 Credits): Grade A (9 Points) → 4 × 9 = 36
  • Physics (4 Credits): Grade B (8 Points) → 4 × 8 = 32
  • Python Lab (2 Credits): Grade S (10 Points) → 2 × 10 = 20
  • Soft Skills (1 Credit): Grade C (7 Points) → 1 × 7 = 7

Total Weighted Points: 36 + 32 + 20 + 7 = 95
Total Credits: 4 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11
SGPA: 95 ÷ 11 = 8.63

How to Calculate VIT CGPA

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) takes into account all courses registered from the first semester up to the current semester.

CGPA = ∑ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ ∑ Total Cumulative Credits

For example, if you scored an SGPA of 8.0 in Semester 1 (20 credits) and an SGPA of 9.0 in Semester 2 (22 credits):

Calculation: ((8.0 × 20) + (9.0 × 22)) ÷ (20 + 22)
= (160 + 198) ÷ 42
= 358 ÷ 42 = 8.52 CGPA

CGPA to Percentage Conversion (Standard VIT Method)

For placement interviews and higher education applications, you often need to convert your VIT CGPA to percentage. The standard formula accepted by VIT administration is simple:

Percentage = CGPA × 10

Example: If your CGPA is 7.58, your percentage equivalent is 7.58 × 10 = 75.8%.

Tips for VIT Students to Maintain a High GPA

  1. Focus on High-Credit Courses: A 4-credit theory course or project impacts your GPA four times more than a 1-credit lab. Prioritize these subjects.
  2. Manage the FFCS: Use the Fully Flexible Credit System to balance your semester load. Don't take too many "heavy" subjects in one go.
  3. Avoid the 'F' Trap: Failing a course is disastrous for your CGPA because the credit denominator grows, but the numerator (grade points) remains zero.
  4. Track Early: Use this how to calculate gpa for vit tool before your final exams to see what grades you need to maintain your target CGPA.
