How GPA & CGPA Are Calculated
Many students confuse GPA (Semester) with CGPA (Cumulative). Here is the distinction:
Semester GPA
This is your performance for a single term (e.g., Fall 2024). It is calculated by dividing total weighted points earned in that semester by total credit hours taken.
Cumulative GPA (CGPA)
This is your overall performance from your first semester to now. To calculate this, you sum the weighted points from all semesters and divide by the total credit hours of your entire degree.
Example Calculation:
- Course: Math (3 Cr) | Grade: A (4.0) | Points: 12.0
- Course: Physics (4 Cr) | Grade: B (3.0) | Points: 12.0
- Total Points: 24.0 | Total Credits: 7
- GPA: 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43
Admissions & Academic Requirements
Maintaining a good GPA is critical for staying enrolled and graduating.
- Graduation Requirement: A minimum CGPA of 2.00 is generally required for BS programs.
- Academic Probation: If your GPA falls below 2.00, you may be placed on probation. Consecutive probations can lead to dropout.
- Scholarships: Merit scholarships at IIUI typically require a 3.50+ CGPA in the previous semester.
Helpful Student Tips
- Verify Credits: Always check if a lab is 1 credit or more. Incorrect credit entry is the #1 reason for calculation errors.
- Retake Policy: If you received an 'F' or 'D', retaking the course allows you to improve your grade. The new grade replaces the old one in GPA calculation (though the old one remains on transcript).
- Plan Ahead: Use this tool before finals. Calculate what grade you need to maintain your 3.0.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Enter the credit hours and letter grade for each course. The calculator multiplies credits by grade points, sums them up, and divides by total credits to give your GPA.
A GPA above 3.50 is excellent and qualifies for honors. A GPA between 3.00 and 3.49 is very good. Below 2.00 is academic warning/probation.
